The school

A Chepalungu school with a Bomet address.

Zasa Comprehensive Schools is a private mixed day-and-boarding school in Chepalungu, in the Siongiroi and Makimeny area of Bomet County. It began in 2003 as Zasa Academy. The gable of the classroom block is lettered Zasa Schools, with the motto Committed to Excellence. The crest on the school bus still carries the first name, Zasa Academy.

The school is owned by two proprietors, Patrick Langat and Wilbert Langat. For years it ran as two academies on the same ground, Zasa Senior and Zasa Junior, each growing on its own. When Kenya moved from 8-4-4 to the competency-based curriculum, the senior academy was closed and the work came back together as one school: Zasa Comprehensive Schools, from baby class through Grade 9.

In Bomet it is remembered as a school that set the pace in KCPE. Candidates regularly posted more than 400 marks and sat at the top of the county. Old boys and girls have gone on to public life, to senior companies (among them names such as Microsoft and the World Bank), and to study and live abroad. The longest serving teacher is Mr Kenneth Chepkwony, on the staff since the founding year, 2003.

Our story

From Zasa Academy to one comprehensive school.

The names on old result slips still say Academy. The school those children walked into is the same ground you visit now in Chepalungu.

  1. 2003

    Zasa Academy opens

The school is founded in Chepalungu as Zasa Academy. It takes children from baby class and kindergarten (nursery) through class one to class eight, the full primary path of the 8-4-4 system. Mr Kenneth Chepkwony joins that first staff, and he is still here.

  2. 2010

A junior school, and the bus

A second school is opened on the compound: Zasa Junior Academy, at first from baby class to class five, later through to class eight. The original school takes the name Zasa Senior Academy. The two grow independently, owned by Patrick Langat and Wilbert Langat. That same year the school buys the yellow bus that still stands in the yard, lettered Zasa Schools, P.O. Box 295, Bomet, fifty-one seats.

  3. 8-4-4 years

A name Bomet learned to watch

Through the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, Zasa became one of the most closely watched private schools in the county. Class eight candidates regularly scored above 400 marks and finished among the county leaders. In 2018 Zasa Academy’s mean of 350 placed it on published lists of Bomet’s strongest schools. In 2019 Chepchirchir Rahab of Zasa Academy scored 427, the best candidate in Bomet that year. Brian Kipngeno Cheruiyot of Zasa Junior Academy scored 418. Other centres measured themselves against those names.

  4. CBC

    One school again

When Kenya replaced 8-4-4 with the competency-based curriculum, Zasa Senior Academy was closed. The junior and senior work was brought under one roof and one name: Zasa Comprehensive Schools. Children now move from pre-primary into primary and on through junior school to Grade 9 without leaving the compound. In May 2024 the school offered Tabitha Cherotich Chumbaa a place through Grade 9. Public thanks named Kipngeno Langat Wilbert for that sponsorship.

  5. Old boys and girls

    What the years produced

Those class eight rooms sent people out. Some entered politics. Some work in senior companies, including names such as Microsoft and the World Bank. Many went on to study and to live abroad. The record is still being written in Chepalungu, under one school and one curriculum.

Patrick Langat

Proprietor. With his brother he built the senior and junior academies that became Zasa Comprehensive Schools.

Wilbert Langat

Proprietor. Publicly thanked in 2024 for sponsoring a Chepalungu girl through Grade 9 at the school.

Mr Kenneth Chepkwony

Longest serving member of staff. He has taught at Zasa since it opened in 2003.

Learning

From the early years to Grade Nine.

Under CBC the school is one path: early years, primary, then junior school to Grade 9. That is why the name is comprehensive. A child who starts in baby class does not have to leave Chepalungu to finish junior secondary.

01

Early years

Baby class, kindergarten and nursery. The first desks on this compound since 2003.

02

Primary

Grades 1 to 6. Under 8-4-4 this ran to class eight at both the senior and junior academies.

03

Junior school

Grades 7 to 9. The CBC successor to the old class seven and eight, kept on the same compound.

School life

Day scholars, boarders, and a 51-seat bus.

The school runs both day and boarding on a compound of cream classroom blocks, blue iron gates and a white picket fence. Parents across Makimeny and Chepalungu use the yellow bus bought in 2010. The plate on the door reads Zasa Schools, P.O. Box 295, Bomet, passenger capacity 51.

Assemblies, sports, cultural days, science congress, tree planting and class trips will be posted in Events as they happen, with the actual photos and videos from that day.

Public record

The county still remembers those 400s.

In the 8-4-4 years Zasa was among the private schools Bomet watched on KCPE day. Many candidates scored above 400. The figures below are the ones that appeared in published county lists. Later KPSEA and KJSEA series will be added when the office has the official slips.

KCPE 2018

Zasa Academy mean 350

Listed among Bomet’s leading schools that year, in the same published table as Tenwek, Ndanai Academy and St Mary’s.

KCPE 2019

Chepchirchir Rahab, 427 marks

Zasa Academy. Best candidate in Bomet County. English 90, Kiswahili 94, Mathematics 82, Science 79, Social Studies 82. KNEC index 25551251002, school code 25551251.

KCPE 2019

Brian Kipngeno Cheruiyot, 418 marks

Zasa Junior Academy, the second centre on the same compound (school code 25551270). Ninth in the published Bomet table that year.

Some websites later pasted the 2019 table under a 2021 heading. We keep those names as 2019. The school’s own full set of 400-plus candidates from the 8-4-4 years will be listed here as the office supplies the slips.
